The 1.7 Km of road upgrade adjoining SEPP 14 wetlands and the shores of Lake Macquarie consisted of the widening of the existing road from two lanes to four and the construction of two new bridges across Cockle Creek.

An urban and landscape design framework was produced and outlined design principles that addressed elements such as cycle/pedestrian links, retaining walls, bridge design, furniture, public art, landscaping and compensatory wetlands.

The result is a popular shared use path that forms part of the Great North Walk following the lake edge and connecting to recreation facilities, fishing spots and wetland trails. The shared use path is one of the most popular Park Runs in the Newcastle region attracting hundreds of runners each weekend.
