Carrington Greenspace Plan
Carrington is an ‘island’ suburb in inner Newcastle built from ship ballast and dredging activities during early settlement. I has a rich industrial history based around coal and port activities. Prior to European settlement, Carrington was a series of small tidal islands comprised of low lying mud flats and mangroves which were a rich source of food for the Worimi and Awabakal people.
The Greenspace Plan was a community driven master plan to address the deteriorating quality of the open space and increased heat island effect through a program of strategic tree planting and ‘green’ initiatives. Measures to improve the suburb’s resilience from sea level rise and the increased regulatory of flooding were considered in the master plan.
